Think Orange – Book Review (Intro)

Think Orange: Imagine the Impact when Church and Family Collide

By: Reggie Joiner

As one of the founders of North Point Community Church, Reggie Joiner makes some observations on the church and the Christian Family.  He picks out themes and builds a case that the church and family are both not doing ‘good enough’ by themselves and each other seem to have set up systems in competition/conflict with each other.  There are some church programs that seem to minimize the work of the family and over provide activities for families giving the family no time to do what it is meant to do.  At the same time there are families that completely disavow the role and nature and office of the church in the Bible and feel that the church is for families only and doing anything but family is wrong and unbiblical.  I think Joiner is one who I can say works hard to strike a balance.

Reggie’s thesis is this:

As long as churches do only what churches are doing, they will only get the results they are presently getting.  And as long as families do what families are doing, they will produce only the outcomes they are presently producing.  To experience a different outcome, we have to embrace a different strategy.

Catchy Concept but Weak Analogy

One thing that I did notice from this book is that it uses a very simplistic orange secondary color and red and yellow primary colors make orange, which pops and stands out, etc.   My problem is, no matter who you say this to, unless they are “Inside the club” they are not going to get what you say when you say, let’s make church orange.

Fact is, when you mention Orange, the only thing that comes to my mind is a bad run on knock, knock joke having to do with banana’s.

My goals:

Over the next few days is to provide reflections on what makes the Yellow-Church and Red-Family work.  I like some of his insights and feel that there are some applicable lessons here.  There may also be areas where I disagree.   However, Joiner does say in his opening, that this is a work in progress and that it’s okay not to take everything here at face value.

Their website is Orange Leaders and I’m finishing their book and leaders manual do see how I can incorporate some of these concept into my philosophy and model of ministry.

Please feel free to enter into this discussion and share your thoughts on this model.
